The Northern Lights
(Click on an image to view at full size in a new window)

Aurora Borealis, known as the Northern Lights, may be seen on Mirror Lake during geomagnetic storms as measured by the KP index which ranges from 0-9. If the disturbance reaches level 5 or above it is possible to see the lights, especially in rural areas between 10pm and 2am, when the sky is darkest. The lights are a result of the interaction of solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field.
Displays were especially strong in the Mirror Lake region in November 2023 and then again in late November 2024. Spring sightings in May ’24 and March ’25 were also noted.
